Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®

Traditional Mayan healers believed that if a woman’s uterus was out of balance, then the woman was also out of balance. Many menstrual, pelvic and seemingly unrelated symptoms can be linked back to congestion in the abdomen and a uterus out of its optimal position. The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® use a combination of soft tissue based treatments, castor oil packs, steaming, belly wraps, diet and movement to promote balance in the flow of blood, nerve, lymph and energy around the body. This in turn influences the position of the pelvic and abdominal organs, and their function.

From a young age Mayan girls were taught this wisdom and shown how to care for their body throughout the lifespan. Generally speaking, this depth of knowledge about our bodies is significantly lacking in our culture. Our mothering journey can bring us face to face with how little we know and how far our feminine rhythms have deviated from what they should be.

Dr Rosita Arvigo, for whom these techniques are named, has matched this traditional touch based work to current understanding of the human body’s biomechanics, biochemistry, scar tissue and emotional health. This has developed an in depth understanding of why these techniques are effective, and how and when they should be implemented. For people with a uterus, the Arvigo® techniques are best known for the correction of the prolapsed or tilted uterus and relief of many common digestive disorders. The impact of scar tissue on the body is also considered and addressed, as are the connections between physical and emotional wellbeing.

Please note that the techniques need to be modified or avoided:

  • During the first trimester of pregnancy or if pregnancy is suspected
  • If cancer is present in the pelvis
  • During acute infection or fever
  • If an IUD (intrauterine device) is present
  • If an abdominal aneurysm is present
  • During menstruation or the few days leading up to bleeding
  • For 6 weeks after vaginal birth or 3 months after caesarean birth
  • If hernia repair or pelvic floor surgery has occurred
  • Typically 6-8 weeks after any surgery

Please be in contact to discuss your situation and plan the best timing for your appointment.

I perform the Arvigo® work as an occupational therapist to help people get involved in everyday activities that have become difficult due to pelvic, menstrual, reproductive and digestive discomfort or challenges.
